Schools Tour Diary #2 – Paignton

26 Feb 2015 | Sam | Schools, Visits away

My second trip away this year took me to Paignton, where I visited South Devon College and spoke with a number of their A Level students about applying to top universities such as Cambridge.

ALWAYS choose a window seat!

I always love traveling down to East Devon because you get to tail the coastline on the train by Dawlish, Teignmouth etc. It really is a beautiful stretch, and always reminds me of how lucky I am to work in such a beautiful part of the country!

At South Devon College, we looked at a range of different topics including researching courses and universities online, how different courses can relate (and more often not!) relate to certain careers, writing personal statements and super-curricular exploration. We’ve had students from South Devon College attend our events before, but I’d never managed to visit them personally, so it was great to be able to do so this year.

A few of their students attended our South West Open Day a couple of years ago, and it was really fantastic to hear about how successful they’d been in their A Level results and their applications to other universities in the UK.

After some lunch and a chat with a few of the college staff about university and Cambridge admissions, it was time to head straight back to Cambridge again! Hopefully I’ll be back in Torbay soon, and I might see some of the Year 12s again at the upcoming Exeter UCAS HE Convention or on one of our summer events.

I was once a student at Downing, but now I work full-time as the School and College Liaison Officer. I'm responsible for organising our outreach work in the South West and advising students and teachers on all things Cambridge!
