Visits to Cambridge

Event Type:

Starts: January 1, 2015

We are delighted to welcome school groups from our link areas in the South West to Downing to experience Cambridge first-hand on day or residential visits. Visits to Cambridge offer a perfect opportunity to raise the aspirations of younger age groups and help alleviate some of the worries about attending university (e.g. finances, moving away from home). For older groups, a visit can offer a real insight into living and studying at university, with helpful advice on making a competitive application in the future.

A common visit programme for Years 9-11 might include:

  • a talk delivered by the School and College Liaison Officer on university life and study, courses and careers, and choosing appropriate post-16 options;
  • a tour of Cambridge city and a look inside other Cambridge Colleges;
  • a facilitated visit to one of the University museums;
  • an academic or subject-themed session (e.g. a workshop on ‘thinking like a university student’ or a sample taster lecture);
  • the chance to meet with current undergraduate students and ask about life at university.

A common visit programme for Years 12-13 might include:

  • talks or workshops delivered by the School and College Liaison Officer or an Admissions Tutor on the admissions process, personal statements or interviews;
  • a tour of Cambridge city and a look inside other Cambridge Colleges;
  • the chance to meet with current undergraduate students and ask about life at university;
  • an academic or subject-themed session (e.g. a sample taster lecture from an academic or PhD student);

We are very flexible in what we can provide and encourage school staff to discuss the aims of each visit with us. If you are interested in organising a school group visit to Downing, please complete the visit request form below.

Accommodation can often be provided during the University vacation periods in September, around Easter and after exams in the summer. Downing aims to cover the costs of accommodation, meals and activities when in Cambridge, especially if these costs would otherwise be passed onto the students attending, but this may not always be possible. Groups are welcome to visit during University term time, but external accommodation may have to be sought.
